SOUTH TEXAS REHABILITATION HOSPITAL HOSTS STROKE AWARENESS HEALTH FAIR

South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital will host “Strike out Stroke – A Stroke Awareness Health Fair” to educate the public about strokes and screen individuals for their risk. The health fair will be held on Saturday, February 18th from 9 a.m. to noon at South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital, located at 425 E. Alton Gloor Boulevard. The stroke awareness health fair is free and open to the public.

STRH is the only in-patient acute rehabilitation hospital located in Brownsville and is dedicated solely to rehabilitative care.

Services offered at the health fair will include: Stroke Risk Evaluations and “Second Chance” Stroke Rehab Evaluations (individuals who have previously suffered a stroke), which include glucose and blood pressure screens. In addition, our rehabilitation team will be available to assist with tours and answer any questions about rehabilitation.

“The key message of the health fair is to know the warning signs of stroke and act on them immediately. We hope to spread the message and educate the community about the risk,” said Jessie Eason Gonzales, CEO of STRH.

“We also want to let the community know that if a stroke does occur, there are now other options for rehabilitation,” said Eason Gonzales.

South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital, in operation since May 2005, is dedicated solely to the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a debilitating illness or injury. With a team of about 20 therapists, STRH offers physical, occupational and speech therapy. The rehab team consists of a medical director, therapists, nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapist, case managers and a dietician to help patients regain their function and independence.

“We are very proud of the outcomes of the patients that we have served. Eighty-five percent of our patients have been able to return home, which speaks to the hard work and dedication to our patients from our rehab team,” said Eason Gonzales.

STRH is striving to become the center of stroke excellence and is currently developing a stroke program which specifically tailors each patient’s rehabilitation.

In addition to the stroke risk evaluations being offered by STRH, Valley Regional Medical Center will offer information on the latest in their Imaging Technology, an STRH pharmacist will be available for questions regarding medications, an STRH dietician will offer healthy diet choices and there will also be information on STRH’s stroke support group.

Dr. Surya Raguthu, physiatrist and medical director, along with the MEC president, Dr. Luis Gaitan, neurologist & neurophysiologist, will be on hand to answer any questions.
